Are you both putting in the same effort?

Are you both putting in the same effort?

A founder I spoke to was working full time on the business while the other cofounders could only contribute part time. They were trying to move towards raising money, and the mismatch had become difficult to ignore.

One person was putting in fifty or sixty hours. The others were closer to eight. The arrangement was supposed to be an equal split, and the founder doing most of the work was struggling with it.

That's a hard conversation to have. You started together, and now you need to talk about what each person can commit and whether the arrangement still makes sense.

I wouldn't expect funding to resolve that for you. If you're already having trouble agreeing while the business is young, there will be bigger decisions ahead that need everyone working together.

The important thing is to have the conversation while you can still make a deliberate choice. Leaving the frustration unspoken doesn't give the team a shared understanding of what's happening.

You may find a way to continue together. You may decide that the partnership needs to change. I can't choose that outcome for someone else's business, and this situation doesn't produce a universal formula for splitting ownership.

But I would want the actual commitments on the table. What can each person do? What does the business need? Are the people involved willing to work through the difference?

Choosing cofounders is a substantial decision. When the working arrangement is causing resentment, it deserves the same care as choosing them in the first place. Have that conversation before the next big commitment makes it harder.
